On the site where Utrecht's defence site once was, the "De Nieuwe Defensie" project is making steady progress. Some 950 new homes are being built here by developing builder ERA Contour B.V., from flats to single-family houses with gardens and both owner-occupied and rented. Surrounded by nature, water, and arterial roads. All within walking distance of the centuries-old city centre. The project started in 2021 and will be built in phases, expected to be completed in 2028.
ERA Contour sought collaboration with GB for The New Defence and is using various GB products in the project, such as cavity anchors, plugs, impact tubes, Iso Jane's, rosettes for insulation, torque anchors, bilge anchors, various brackets, edge box anchors, pane supports, and window supports. These products and other building supplies are supplied by supplier Isero.
Nico Utberg, senior advisor Quality & Service at ERA Contour explains the successful cooperation between the organisations. He emphasises that this cooperation is not limited to this one project, but has continued for many years. 'GB has supported ERA Contour in obtaining knowledge in the form of technical advice and has provided assistance in conducting tests. Thanks to GB, we can now carry out cavity anchor tensile tests ourselves. This has given us a better feel for these tests ourselves.'
ERA Contour's engagement with the masons also grew significantly, both internally and externally. This was achieved by actively involving them in the tests. Nico says: 'In the past, we encountered plugs that were not fully in the concrete because the hole had been drilled too shallow. We sometimes deliberately create this situation to show that the pull-out value is then no longer sufficient. These practical situations helped ERA Contour and the masons learn valuable lessons to further improve the quality of the project. By pointing out the problems we encounter, GB can respond again by developing solutions, which meet the specific needs.'
Nico continues: 'Providing advice regarding cavity anchors remains an important aspect, sometimes underestimating the complexity. GB has good contacts with Bureau Vekemans (Masonry consultancy), which helps in addressing these challenges. GB's approachability and openness are strengths that make communication pleasant.'
The next project is also already planned. 'We are currently working with GB on designing a calculation module for fixing rear structures that can be used for a final finish (sheet material, bamboo or other cladding). This module will soon include standard timber dimensions, type and numbers of angles and brackets, as well as the number and type of screws or nails required,' says Nico.
