Project in the spotlight: Wonderwoods
A green oasis in the heart of Utrecht.
A green oasis in the heart of Utrecht.
Wonderwoods is an unusual and innovative architectural project in Utrecht. The project is designed to offer city dwellers a unique and healthy living environment where nature, sustainability and modern design come together. By creating a green oasis in the middle of the city, people can live, work and relax in harmony with nature. Project developer G&S& is thus bringing biodiversity back to the city. Wonderwoods is being realised by Bouwcombinatie Wonderwoods (Boele & van Eesteren and Kondor Wessels Amsterdam), commissioned by Wonderwoods Development and is part of the redevelopment of Utrecht's Beurskwartier. The first completions of Wonderwoods are expected to take place in mid-2024.
The project consists of two green towers of 70 and 105 metres high, enriching Utrecht's skyline. The tallest tower (Tower Boeri) will have a vertical facade forest with thousands of plants and trees, while the lower tower will have large roof gardens. The green facades will contribute to the city's air quality and biodiversity and improve the quality of life for residents.
For the assembly details of the timber frame construction of Tower Boeri, Bouwcombinatie Wonderwoods contacted GB at an early stage. The challenge was to find solutions that were not only functional, but also aesthetic and space-saving. The limited space in detailing was a crucial factor in making the choices. Michel Vernooij, technical advisor: "In the end, the GB HSB strip was chosen because of its slim height profile. This solution also offered the possibility of efficient and quick installation in relation to crane time." GB also provided a customised solution for the fixings on the top of the hsb elements in collaboration with the joinery factory.
Building consortium Wonderwoods was positive about the results. The processing of the selected assembly details went according to plan.
